FULL SEDER EXPERIENCE: SETUP

Preparing for the Passover is a very special duty of honor!

In Matthew 26, we read, “On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?” Jesus sent his disciples to make preparations for that most important night.

Your help in preparing the church is connecting back to what the disciples did 2,000 years ago under Jesus’ instructions. Thank you for taking that honorable position!

As a part of the Passover Experience, we will need a presentation table and tables for your congregants. Following is a list of what is needed for each table. If you have any questions call us at 770-642-4706.

(For the best experience, we highly recommend the full Passover Seder Experience. However, if you need a more simplified version of the Seder, click here for details regarding a Passover demonstration.)

Instructions for Setting up the Presentation Table:

  1. A six or eight-foot table set up in the front of the sanctuary or room in which the presentation will take place. The table should be covered with a white tablecloth and have all of the same elements as the congregants’ tables listed below.

  2. We need another eight-foot table in the foyer for books and materials.

  3. Please provide a headset or lapel microphone if available.

Instructions for Setting up Passover Tables (Assuming 8 people per table):

The tables may be set as simply or elaborately as you wish. We have had groups use anything from paper plates to fine china. Most groups use very nice paper products and plastic cups. The food items are placed on the center plate - see photo examples below.

FOR THE CENTER OF THE TABLE:

  1. One large dinner plate (a charger works best) for the center of the table.

  2. Two candle holders (any kind) with two 10 to 12" white taper candles to fit (off-white or a pastel color works fine).

  3. One book of matches.

  4. Pens/pencils for people to take notes. We will provide booklets.

  5. One small container (1/4 cup) of salt water (One cup water-one tablespoon salt - salinity of ocean water)

  6. One large onion (**do not chop or peel--leave whole).

  7. A bunch of parsley - One small sprig/stem per person (~10 stems per table, flat leaf or curly). Can cut the bottom of stems and put in water to maintain freshness, don’t put out until close to the time of the Seder.

  8. Two eggs hard-boiled and peeled (Do not need to be perfect. You can also buy hard-boiled eggs pre-peeled).

  9. Two plastic knives.

  10. One container with two cups of Charoset with spoon. (apple/honey mixture, recipe and video demonstration below).

  11. One small scoop of prepared horseradish in a small condiment size container (~1/3 jar per table). **Must be spicy, not mild. Found in the refrigerator section of the grocery store--where the sour cream and cream cheese is kept**). No mayonnaise cream/sauce or powder please! We recommend Silver Spring. See pictures below. Please do not open the jar until the speaker has arrived.

  12. Five pieces of Matzah (unleavened bread) - Two pieces broken into quarters and placed on center plate, three pieces are layered inside the napkin (video below). Matzah should be plain. There are many good brands, see pictures below. If the box says “not for Passover use” this does not matter - this is okay, you CAN use it. You can buy a box of gluten free matzah for those with allergies, but please purchase regular, unsalted Matzah for general use.

  13. Two large (15x17) white dinner napkins for the matzah cover - see picture below. (See video explanation below for Matzah cover setup).

  14. One-half gallon of grape juice in a carafe or pitcher

FOR EACH PLACE SETTING:

  1. One spoon and one fork.

  2. One drinking cup for the grape juice (5-8oz clear plastic works well).

  3. One dessert-sized plate.

  4. One large napkin.

Charoset Recipe: This will serve 8-10 people, multiply recipe accordingly - See video below for demonstration

  • 2 sweet (Gala or Fuji) apples - Factor about 1/4 apple per person (For Example: For 100 people, you need about 25 apples, etc.)

  • 1/2 cup walnuts

  • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon

  • 1 tbs. honey (taste and make sure it is sweet)

  • 1 tbs. grape juice or sweet Passover wine

Core and peel apples. Chop walnuts in a food processor until finely chopped (about the size of grape nuts) and set aside. Chop apples in food processor until finely chopped – but not as fine as the walnuts. Combine the apples and walnuts in a bowl and stir in the cinnamon, honey and wine/grape juice until well blended. See picture below for desired consistency.
